Mobile Display Folder Replacement Guide – Step by Step

If your phone screen has cracked, gone blank, or shows lines when you bend it, chances are the display folder is gone. In India, people call it “folder change” when we replace the full display unit—screen + touch + flex cable.

As someone who has seen hundreds of phones come in with screen issues, let me explain how to know if you really need a folder change, which parts to buy, and how the replacement is done step by step.

When do you actually need a display or folder change?

  • Screen cracked but touch still works → If you’re okay with the crack, you can use it. But for a neat finish, change the display.
  • Screen blank / flickering / lines appear when bending the phone → This is a clear case of folder damage.
  • Touch not working → 99% of the time, you need a full display replacement.

In most modern phones, the glass, touch, and display are fused together. So, changing just one part is tricky and risky. That’s why most shops (including us) prefer to replace the entire display unit.

Things to check before starting

  1. Backup your data (just in case).
  2. Switch off the phone completely.
  3. Buy the right part – Always match your exact model number. For example, Samsung Galaxy A315F and A315G look same but parts differ.
  4. Choose the quality:
    • OEM/Original Pull – Best quality, same as company-fitted.
    • A+ or In-Cell – Budget-friendly and good for most Androids.
    • Copy/Low Grade – Very cheap, but you’ll compromise on brightness and touch.

Tools needed

Nothing fancy—just the basics:

  • Small screwdriver set (different phones have different screws).
  • Plastic opening tools or old ATM card.
  • Hair dryer or heat gun (to loosen glue).
  • Tweezers, spudger, and isopropyl alcohol (to clean old glue).
  • Pre-cut adhesive tape or thin B-7000 glue for sticking the new screen.

Step-by-step replacement guide

1. Opening the phone

  • First, remove the SIM tray.
  • Heat the back side of the phone for a minute or two—this softens the glue.
  • Gently insert a plastic pick or card around the edge. Take your time; don’t rush.
  • If the phone has a rear fingerprint sensor, open slowly like a book and disconnect the cable first.

2. Remove covers and battery connector

  • Unscrew the mid-frame (plastic or metal inside cover). Keep screws safely sorted—mixing them up can cause trouble later.
  • Remove the small shields over the connectors.
  • Very important → disconnect the battery first before touching anything else.

3. Disconnect the display

  • Find the display connector (flat ribbon cable). Carefully pop it off.
  • If your new display comes with a frame, transfer small items like earpiece mesh or side buttons to the new one.

4. Removing the broken screen

  • Heat the front glass slightly.
  • Use a plastic card to separate the screen from the frame.
  • Be gentle around the flex cable area. Once loose, remove the old screen completely.

5. Clean the frame

  • Remove all the old glue using tweezers and alcohol.
  • Make sure the frame is neat and flat. A bent frame means the new display won’t sit properly.

6. Test the new display

  • Before applying glue, connect the new display’s cable to the board.
  • Reconnect the battery and switch on the phone.
  • Check touch, brightness, colors, and sensors.
  • Ensure the frame is clean from all sides. There should be no glue, adhesive residue, or dust remaining on the frame.
  • If everything works, switch off again and disconnect.

7. Final fitting

  • Apply thin adhesive or pre-cut tape around the frame.
  • Place the new display properly, without pressure.
  • Reconnect display and battery, screw everything back, and seal the back cover with adhesive. You may tight with rubber band.
  • Power on and test again. Done!

Brand-specific notes

iPhones:

  • You must shift the earpiece + sensor flex carefully. If damaged, Face ID can stop working.
  • After replacement, you might see “Important Display Message.” That’s normal.

Samsung / OnePlus / Pixel (OLED phones):

  • OLED screens are very delicate. Don’t press hard in the middle.
  • For in-display fingerprint, re-register fingerprints after replacement.

Xiaomi / Realme / Vivo / Oppo:

  • Many budget phones use In-Cell displays. Always test touch and brightness before sealing.

Common problems after replacement

  • Black screen but phone is on: Connector not seated properly. Try again.
  • Touch not working: Check digitizer flex cable.
  • Lines or flicker: Usually a faulty or damaged part—ask for replacement.
  • Face ID / Fingerprint not working: Recheck alignment, or re-enroll biometrics.

Final tips

  • Always buy good quality parts. Cheap ones can drain your battery.
  • Test the display before sealing it.

  • And once your new display is fitted, use a good case + tempered glass. It saves you from another folder change.
